Ask four shops for a price to “protect the paint” and you will be quoted four different jobs under one word. The confusion is profitable, so it persists. This is what each of the four actually is, what it demonstrably does, what its own manufacturer says it does not do, and the order they have to go in.
First, what you are protecting
A factory finish is a stack: an electro-coat on the bare metal, a primer, the colour coat, and a clear coat over the top. The whole stack is thin. DeFelsko, who make the gauges used to measure it, put the usual range at “4–7 mils (100–180 microns)”, with the clear coat alone at “1.5–2.0 mils (35–50 microns)”.
Every word that follows depends on that second number. The clear coat is the layer that carries the gloss, holds the ultraviolet stabilisers and takes the damage. It is roughly half the thickness of a sheet of paper, and nothing you can buy replaces it.
Polishing removes paint. That is the mechanism.
Machine polishing — compounding, paint correction, whatever it is called on the invoice — does not fill a scratch. It abrades the clear coat down to the base of the scratch so that the surface is level again and the light stops catching the edge. The defect is removed by removing the paint around it.
That is why manufacturers put a ceiling on it. DeFelsko report it as an industry position: “Most auto manufacturers recommend that a maximum of 0.3 mils (8 microns) clear coat be removed as prevention from UV damage to underlying paint layers.” Eight microns. For the life of the car.
Set that against what a correction step actually takes off. The most useful number we found is not from a manufacturer but from an instrumented test posted publicly by a detailer, who gauged a panel before and after an aggressive compounding step with a cutting pad: an average of 133 microns before, 126 after — about seven microns, from one pass. Treat that as one measurement rather than a specification. Even so, the arithmetic is uncomfortable and it is the point of this section: an aggressive correction can spend most of a car’s lifetime allowance in an afternoon.
A car can be corrected properly a small number of times. After that, the only honest answer is paint.
Which is also why “it looked perfect when I collected it and the swirls came back after two washes” is such a common story. A glaze fills defects with oils and fillers and hides them convincingly. It has not touched the paint, and it leaves with the water.
Ceramic coating is a chemical layer, not armour
A ceramic coating is silica chemistry in a solvent carrier. GYEON describe their own product as silica “blended with a suitable blend of solvents which allows its application onto the surface of the paint giving as a result substantial hardness”, which then cures as the solvents leave — “90% evaporates within the first 24 hours” and full cure “might be accomplished after 14 days”.
The thickness is the number nobody quotes. GYEON: “Depending on the number of layers applied, thickness of quartz coating may amount from 0.2 up to 1.5 microns.” CARPRO give “1~2 micron per coat”. So on a clear coat of thirty-five to fifty microns you are adding a layer around one or two. Do that division yourself. Whatever a coating is doing for your car, stopping physical damage is not plausibly it.
What it does do is chemical and optical, and that is worth having in this climate: a hydrophobic surface that sheds water and dirt, real resistance to chemical attack — GYEON rate theirs as “entirely resistant to chemical substances… with pH between 2 and 11” — some resistance to the light marring that washing itself causes, ultraviolet protection, and gloss.
And here is the part worth printing in full, because it is GYEON saying it on their own consumer site rather than us saying it about somebody else’s product: “It will not protect your car against scratches, swirls or scuffs, unless maintained correctly. It won’t protect you against stone chips or any other mechanical damage. A ceramic coating is not paint protection film.”
Ceramic Pro concede the same ground on their own site: a coating “does not provide adequate protection from rock chips”, it “does not guarantee or protect against more severe, deeper scratches”, it is “not a viable option in preventing larger dings or dents”, and — the one that matters most in a place with hard water and evaporation this fast — mineral build-up “leads to unsightly water spots that unfortunately cannot be prevented with the application of ceramic coatings.” They also answer the maintenance question directly: “Yes – you absolutely need to maintain a ceramic coated vehicle.”
PPF is the one that stops a stone
Paint protection film is a physical layer, and the difference in scale is the whole argument. XPEL publish the construction of their Ultimate Plus film layer by layer: a clearcoat of 12 microns, polyurethane of 152 microns, and acrylic adhesive of 28 microns — 192 microns nominal. That is thicker than the entire factory paint stack it is laid over, and roughly a hundred times a coating.
It is also the only one of the four whose central claim is a published test result rather than an adjective. The same data sheet lists stone chip resistance as “No Detrimental Effect” under ASTM D3170 / SAE J400 — gravel fired at the panel under pressure. The self-healing is described mechanically too: the clear coat “employs special elastomeric polymers that allow scratches in the surface to ‘heal’ over time”. SunTek note that their film self-heals “utilizing heat from a vehicle’s engine or the sun”, which in a Gulf summer is not an occasional event.
For a car living here, two lines further down that data sheet are more interesting than any of the marketing: heat aging of sixteen days at 80°C with “No Detrimental Effect”, and natural weathering of three years at 45° south-facing exposure in Arizona, same result. Somebody has left this material in a desert on purpose and published what happened.
The limits are real and XPEL state them: “deeper scratches that penetrate the film may not fully heal”, and it “may not completely prevent damage from more severe impacts”. And structurally — a film 0.19 mm thick, bonded to a panel, deforms with that panel. It is not dent protection and nothing about it claims to be.
Detailing is the one that decides how long the rest lasts
Washing is not the boring item on this list. It is the mechanism by which most paint damage in this country happens. Autoglym’s technical director, speaking about Saharan dust settling on cars, gave the sentence that should be printed on every steering wheel in Sharjah: “Sand and other large particles are abrasive, so wiping with your finger or a cloth may cause fine scratches that will then require polishing later.”
Put that next to the clear coat being thirty-five to fifty microns thick and a grain of quartz sand being what it is, and the finger-written message on a dusty bonnet becomes an expensive piece of correspondence. The discipline is the same everywhere: get the loose material off with water and foam before anything touches the paint, then wash with two buckets — one for shampoo and one to rinse the mitt in, with a grit guard so the dirt you removed stays at the bottom instead of going back onto the car.
And then there is the sun. What ultraviolet actually does to a clear coat is not gentle uniform thinning. NIST research on a clear polymer coating found that “photodegradation… was not a uniform thickness reduction process; instead, nanoscale localized depressions initiated at certain sites on the surface, which then enlarged and deepened with exposure.” The coating studied was an epoxy rather than an automotive clear, so read it for the mechanism and not the numbers — but the mechanism explains what everybody here has seen: gloss goes long before thickness does, because the surface has become microscopically pitted.
The order, and why it is not negotiable
You do not need a workshop’s opinion on this. CARPRO’s own instructions for applying their coating set the sequence out: “To gain the most from CQUARTZ your vehicle should have all surfaces 100% clean and paint polished to a high level”, “If contamination exists, Iron X and Clay your vehicle before polishing”, and “Use CARPRO Eraser to remove any oils leftover after polishing — This is critical to ensure durability.”
- Wash and decontaminate — chemical iron removal, then clay for what is bonded to the surface.
- Correct, if it needs correcting, and only as far as it actually needs. This is the irreversible step and the one to be conservative about.
- Degrease. Polishing oils left on the paint are the most common reason a coating fails early.
- Protect: a coating, or film, or film with a coating on top of it. XPEL confirm the combination is fine — “you can coat paint protection film (PPF) with ceramic coating” and their own ceramic “will not void XPEL’s PPF warranty.”
- Maintain. Every manufacturer above says the protection depends on it, and none of them sells it as maintenance-free.
The four, side by side

We do all four here — detailing, machine polishing, ceramic coating and paint protection film — which is exactly why it is worth saying plainly that most cars do not need all four. We would rather tell you which one yours actually needs than sell you the longer invoice. Often the honest answer for a car that has been washed badly for three years is one careful correction and then a change of washing habit, and nothing else at all.
