Car repair
Most cars do not arrive with a diagnosis. They arrive with a noise, a light, a smell or a puddle, and the owner has been told four different things by four different people. This is the page for that car. We find the fault first, price it second, and start work third, in that order and not in any other.
Start here
- 1Describe what the car is doing, in your words
- 2We investigate it and send you the findings and the price
- 3You approve each line before anything is done
1
Sounds like your car?
Find the line closest to what your car is doing. You do not need the name of the job — the symptom is carried into the booking form with it, and every line below starts at the same place: what we check, and how the work is done.
- 1 There is a noise and I do not know where it is coming from
- 2 The temperature gauge goes up in traffic
- 3 There is a puddle under the car in the morning
- 4 It shakes when I stop at the lights
- 5 There is a burning smell after I drive
- 6 The steam comes out when I open the bonnet
- 7 It is loud from underneath, like a hole in the exhaust
- 8 Another garage quoted me a big job and I want a second opinion

What is included
- 2.1Cooling system: radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses, fans and a pressure test on the whole system
- 2.2Oil and fluid leak tracing back to the source before any gasket is quoted, because a wet engine bay is not a diagnosis
- 2.3Drive belts, tensioners, pulleys and idler bearings
- 2.4Timing belt and timing chain work, including the tensioner and the water pump where the belt drives it
- 2.5Exhaust from manifold to tailpipe: leaks, mountings, flexible sections and heat shields
- 2.6Clutch, flywheel and manual gearbox work
- 2.7Engine and gearbox mounts, which are the usual answer to a vibration at idle
- 2.8Fuel delivery: pump, filter and injector cleaning or replacement
- 2.9A road test before and after, by the same technician, on the same route
This work is done in this workshop, and nothing on your car is touched until you know what we found and what it costs.

What happens
-
3.1
You describe it, then we reproduce it
A fault that only happens cold, or only at 80 km/h, or only after twenty minutes, is a different fault from one that is always there. We ask when, and then we drive the car until we have heard it ourselves.
-
3.2
We find the source, not the symptom
A wet engine bay is cleaned and driven before anything is quoted, because oil travels and the highest wet point is not always the leak. A noise is isolated with a stethoscope or by disconnecting the driven component, not by replacing parts until it stops.
-
3.3
The estimate separates the must from the might
Parts and labour are listed separately, with VAT shown as its own line. What is unsafe to drive on is marked as such. What can wait is marked as such. You approve each line before anything is ordered.
-
3.4
If the job grows, it stops
Stripping a component sometimes reveals more than the estimate covered. When that happens the work stops where it is, and you are told what was found, why it changes the job and what the revised line costs, to approve or decline. Nobody phones you from under a car to ask for more money without explaining what changed.

Common questions
Can you tell me what is wrong over the phone?
We can narrow it and tell you whether it sounds urgent enough to stop driving. We cannot price it. The same description — a knock from the front when going over a bump — covers a drop link worth very little and a suspension arm worth a great deal more, and guessing between them over the phone helps nobody.
Do you use original parts or aftermarket?
Both exist in this market and both have a place. The rule we hold to is that the invoice names the brand of every part fitted and states whether it is new, reconditioned or used, before you approve it. You should never discover what was fitted to your car after you have paid for it.
What if the job is something you do not do?
We will say so and tell you who does. There are jobs that belong with a specialist — some transmission internals, some hybrid high-voltage work, machining — and sending you to the right place costs us one job and keeps you as a customer. Tyres and wheel alignment are not something we claim to do unless this site says we do.
Another workshop already gave me a quote. Will you look at it?
Yes, and you should get one. Bring the quote and the car. We inspect the car ourselves rather than reading their list back to you, and if their diagnosis is right we will tell you that too. A second opinion that always disagrees with the first is not a second opinion.
