Audi RS servicing and repair in Sharjah

The letters change the hardware, not the tune. An RS3 and a TT RS carry a five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI that exists nowhere else in the range. An RS4 of the B7 generation and an RS5 carry a 4.2 FSI V8 whose chain drive sits at the gearbox end of the engine. An RS6 or RS7 carries the 4.0 twin-turbo V8, and the earlier RS4 and RS6 carry a hydraulic suspension called Dynamic Ride Control that is unlike anything on a standard car. Work out which of those is in front of you and most of the job has already been decided.

Why we see these

The RS cars in this emirate are almost all second-hand and almost all second cars, and that combination produces a particular kind of neglect that is nobody’s fault. A car driven twice a week and parked the rest of the time does not accumulate distance, so a distance-based service never falls due — while the things that actually age on these cars age on time and on heat regardless of whether the car moved. Hydraulic fluid in a damper circuit degrades sitting still. A plastic coolant housing becomes brittle sitting still. A differential’s oil oxidises on a short hard drive far faster than on a long gentle one. So the usual history we see is a car with modest mileage, a clean interior and several items quietly past due, whose owner has been told it is a low-mileage example and has reasonably believed it. The other thing worth saying is that these are expensive cars to guess at: an RS engine that needs its chain drive attended to is an engine-out job, and the difference between finding that early and finding it late is very large.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • Servicing driven by time and heat, not only by distance. These cars cover little ground and sit in a hot country between drives, which is the condition that ages fluids and plastics fastest — so an interval counted in months matters more here than one counted in kilometres.
  • The suspension system identified before a damper is quoted. An early RS4 or RS6 may carry Dynamic Ride Control, which is a hydraulic system with cross-linked circuits and accumulators, not four independent dampers — and a workshop that does not know that will order the wrong part and drain the wrong thing.
  • Coolant components treated as a system on the five-cylinder engines. Housings, the pump module and the sensors around them are plastic and they age together, so replacing one and returning the car is usually replacing one of three.
  • The rear differential’s oil condition and its actuator both checked where the car has a sport differential. It is an active unit with clutch packs, it has a real service item and a real electronic control, and it is routinely serviced as though it were a plain axle.
  • Fuel grade taken seriously. These are high-compression, high-boost engines whose ignition maps assume the fuel they were developed on, and a car run permanently on the lowest grade available will pull timing to protect itself, feel slow, and be brought in as a fault.
  • Any modification declared before diagnosis. A remap, a downpipe or an intake changes what the correct readings are, and a workshop diagnosing a modified car against standard values will chase something that was never wrong.

What actually comes in

An oily film down one damper and a stain on the wheel arch liner, a ride that has gone hard and noisy over small bumps, or a car that has started to lean in a corner it used to sit flat through.

How we establish it

This is the fault most often mis-sold on an older RS, and the reason is that it does not look like anything unusual from the outside. Dynamic Ride Control is not four separate dampers — the front and rear dampers on opposite corners are plumbed together through pipes and pressure accumulators, so that the system resists roll hydraulically rather than by fitting stiffer springs. That is why the car rides as well as it does. It is also why a single leak changes the behaviour of the whole car rather than one corner, and why fitting a conventional damper to one corner of it is not a repair at all. So the first thing to establish is whether the car has the system, which is done by looking at the pipework rather than at the model year, and then where the circuit is losing pressure. We tell an owner plainly what the system is and what the realistic options are before anything is ordered, because the parts decision here is a large one and it should not be made from a catalogue.

A rattle for a second or two on a cold start that goes away once oil pressure builds, or a camshaft timing fault stored with no other symptom at all.

How we establish it

The chains on this engine are at the back, between the engine and the gearbox, which is an entirely reasonable engineering decision and an expensive one to service: reaching them means the engine comes out. That single fact is why this belongs at the top of any assessment of one of these cars rather than at the bottom. The early warning is a brief rattle on a cold start — the tensioners lose their oil overnight and take a moment to take up — and the second warning is a stored camshaft timing deviation with nothing else to show for it. Neither is dramatic, and both are easy to dismiss. So on any RS4 or RS5 of this generation we read the camshaft adaptation values, listen to a genuinely cold start rather than a warm one, and say clearly where the engine sits. Caught as a plan, it is a large but predictable job. Caught as a failure, it is a different conversation entirely.

A coolant smell after switching off with nothing on the floor, a level that needs topping up every few weeks, or a temperature gauge that now takes far longer than it used to to come up.

How we establish it

The five-cylinder is the reason to own one of these cars and it is also the part of the range with the least in common with anything else Audi builds, which means it is the part a general workshop is least likely to have met. Its coolant path runs through plastic housings that carry the thermostat, the pump and several sensors, and those housings become brittle with age and heat — not with distance, which matters here because these cars are usually low-mileage. The leak that results is often a weep rather than a flow, which is why the owner smells it before they see it, and it can seep onto a hot surface and evaporate leaving nothing on the ground at all. A slow warm-up is the other half of the same story: a thermostat that no longer closes properly. We pressure-test the cold system and hold it, rather than looking for a drip, and we say which of the housings is failing and which of them will follow, because doing one and returning the car is a false economy an owner should be allowed to refuse knowingly.

A loss of boost that arrives gradually over months, a whistle that changes pitch, or a smell of exhaust in the engine bay with no visible crack anywhere on a manifold.

How we establish it

On the later version of this engine the exhaust manifold is not a separate part bolted to the head — it is cast into the head itself, with coolant passing around it. That is a good design for warm-up and for packaging and it makes the turbocharger response what it is, but it changes what certain faults mean. There is no manifold to replace, no manifold gasket to blow, and an exhaust smell with no visible crack is therefore a different investigation from the one it would be on a conventional engine. It also puts exhaust heat directly into the coolant, which is why the cooling system on this engine is not a side issue. So the work is done with pressure and with data rather than with a torch: a smoke test to find where exhaust gas is escaping, boost requested against boost delivered logged on the road, and the turbocharger shaft checked directly. And an owner is told plainly which repairs on this engine are a part and which are a cylinder head, because the difference is not obvious from the symptom.

A shudder or a bind at low speed on full lock, a hum from the back of the car that changes with power rather than with road speed, or a message saying a chassis system is unavailable.

How we establish it

This is not a limited-slip differential and it is not a plain axle. It is an active unit that can send torque deliberately to the outside rear wheel through clutch packs loaded by an electric actuator, and it is a large part of why the car turns the way it does. Two things follow that a general service misses. First, it has its own oil to its own specification, doing a job in a clutch pack rather than merely lubricating gears, and putting a standard axle oil into it will make it behave badly. Second, the actuator and its control are electronic, so a fault here can present as a chassis message with no mechanical symptom at all — and conversely a shudder on full lock is very often oil rather than hardware. We read the unit for stored faults and check whether the actuator is being commanded and responding before anything is taken apart, and we say whether the answer is an oil service, an actuator or the unit itself.

A boost fault stored after a hard acceleration, power that is there one day and not the next, or a rattle from one side of the engine at light throttle that a second opinion has called an exhaust.

How we establish it

On this engine the wastegates are not held shut by a spring and moved by pressure — each is driven by an electric actuator that reports its own position, and the engine learns where fully closed is and works from that learned value. Two useful things come out of that. The first is that the failure is often gradual and intermittent rather than absolute: an actuator that has drifted, or a linkage that has developed play, gives a car that makes its power sometimes, which is the description owners actually bring us and the one that gets dismissed as nothing. The second is that it can be read rather than guessed. We log the commanded position against the reported position on the road at full load, and compare the two turbochargers against each other, which is usually the moment it becomes obvious. A rattle at light throttle from one bank, with a boost deviation on the same bank, is not an exhaust.

Questions we get asked about these

One of my dampers is leaking. Can I just replace that corner?

First establish whether your car has Dynamic Ride Control, because if it does, the question does not apply. On those cars the dampers on opposite corners are plumbed together through pipes and pressure accumulators, so the system resists roll hydraulically instead of with stiffer springs. It is not four independent units, and a conventional damper fitted to one corner of it is not a repair — the circuit it belongs to still has a leak and the car still will not behave. Whether you have the system is settled by looking underneath at the pipework, not by the model year, and it takes a few minutes. Once we know, the options and their real costs can be put to you honestly, and it is a decision worth making with the facts rather than from a parts catalogue.

My RS4 rattles for a second when I start it cold. Is that serious?

It is worth taking seriously, and the reason is where the chains are. On the 4.2 FSI V8 the timing chain drive is at the gearbox end of the engine rather than the front, which means that attending to it is an engine-out job — so this is the one item that most changes what a car of this type is worth. A brief rattle on a genuinely cold start is the usual early sign: the tensioners bleed down overnight and take a moment to take up. It is not an emergency and the car will keep driving, which is precisely why it gets ignored. Bring it in cold — not warmed up on the way over, because a warm start will not show it — and we will listen to it starting and read the camshaft adaptation values, then tell you where the engine actually is. Knowing that early turns a very large job into a planned one.

The car has done very little mileage. Does it still need servicing?

Yes, and on a car like this low mileage is closer to a risk than a reassurance. The things that fail on these cars mostly fail on time and heat rather than on distance: hydraulic fluid degrades, plastic coolant housings become brittle, rubber hardens, brake fluid absorbs water, and a battery in a car that sits in this climate has a short life whatever the odometer says. Meanwhile a distance-based schedule never comes due, so nothing prompts anybody. The pattern we see most often is a tidy, genuinely low-mileage car with four or five items quietly past their date, owned by somebody who was told — accurately — that it had barely been driven. A service interval counted in months is the one that matters here.

Does the rear differential need its own service?

If your car has the sport differential, yes, and it is one of the most commonly skipped items on these cars. It is not a plain axle: it is an active unit that deliberately sends torque to the outside rear wheel through clutch packs worked by an electric actuator, and it is a significant part of how the car turns. The oil in it is working inside a clutch pack rather than only lubricating gears, so it has its own specification and filling it with a standard axle oil will make the car shudder on full lock and feel wrong at low speed. Ask whether your car has the unit — not every RS does — and if it does, ask when the oil was last done and which specification went in.

Does it matter which fuel I use?

On these engines it genuinely does, and the effect is not subtle. They run high compression and high boost, and their ignition maps were developed on a particular fuel quality. Given a lower one the engine detects knock and protects itself by retarding the ignition — which is the system working correctly, not a fault — and the driver experiences a car that feels flat and unresponsive. Owners bring that in as a problem and are sometimes sold a diagnosis for it. The way to tell is to read the timing correction on live data while driving. If the engine is pulling timing on the fuel in the tank, that is the answer, and it costs nothing to act on.
