An M car does not carry a tuned version of the engine in the standard car. It carries a different engine with its own letter: S54 in the E46 M3, S65 and S85 in the V8 and V10 cars, S55 in the F80 M3 and M4, S63 in the M5, M6 and the X models. Those engines were designed to be worked, which is a genuine engineering achievement and also the reason their service items are not optional the way another car’s are. A bearing, a hub or a seal on one of these is a known item with a known interval, and the difference between an owner who knows that and one who does not is usually the difference between a service and an engine.

Why we see these

The M cars that arrive here arrive on two routes and the route shows in the car. A good number came in new and have stayed with owners who service them properly; a good number more came in used from the American market or from Europe at a price that made an eight-cylinder car look like a six-cylinder one, and those are the cars where a deferred item has usually been deferred by somebody who was never told it existed. Neither is a bad car. But the climate is unkind to the specific things an M car depends on: a high-revving engine that makes its power at the top of the range is being asked to do that with intake air at 45°C, an oil cooler sized for a European summer is working at the edge of what it was drawn for, and an engine that lives on precise oil film thickness cannot afford an owner who stretches the interval. The most valuable thing we can tell a new owner is which known item their particular car is closest to, and what it costs to deal with now against what it costs to deal with later.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • The engine identified by its S number and its build date, because the known items move between production runs. M3 and M5 have each named several entirely different engines across the years, and the interval that matters on one of them does not exist on another.
  • Oil changed on distance and time rather than on the car’s own condition-based calculation. That calculation was written for a long European motorway journey; it does not describe a car that is driven hard for twenty minutes and parked in heat, and on an engine whose bearings are a known item the interval is the cheapest insurance available.
  • Oil analysis rather than opinion where a bearing is in question. A sample says what is actually coming off the bearing shells, which is a fact, where a listener at the exhaust is offering a guess about the most expensive component in the car.
  • A dual-clutch or SMG gearbox treated as the hydraulic machine it is. Both work a clutch through a pump and an accumulator, both have a pressure that can be read, and both are routinely condemned on a symptom that a pressure reading would have explained in ten minutes.
  • Brake hardware identified before a brake job is priced, and the pad matched to the disc rather than to the model. These cars have been sold with more than one brake package, and a pad chosen from the wrong one is a safety item, not a saving.
  • Coding and adaptation treated as part of the repair. On these cars a component that has been replaced but not registered to the car is a job that is not finished, and it will present later as a fault that looks like a different failure.

What actually comes in

Named at component level, with what the driver notices first and what we do to establish it is that and not something else that feels identical from the driving seat.

Often nothing at all until it is too late. Where there is a warning it is a low, deep knock from the bottom of the engine at light load once it is hot, or oil pressure that reads lower than it used to at idle.

How we establish it

This is the single most important thing to understand about owning one of these engines, and the honest version of it is not the frightening one. The bearing shells in these engines run a tighter clearance than an ordinary engine’s, which is part of how they rev the way they do, and that makes them far less tolerant of oil that is old, thin from fuel dilution, or has been asked to work at temperatures it was not chosen for. The failure is not sudden and it is not random: it is wear, it is progressive, and it can be measured long before it is heard. So we do not guess at it. An oil sample sent for analysis reports the bearing metals in parts per million, and a rising trend across two samples is a fact about the engine rather than an opinion about a noise — which means the decision to replace shells becomes a planned job at a known price instead of an emergency. Where the numbers are clean we say the engine is fine and change nothing, and that answer is worth having too.

How we establish it

On this engine the timing sprocket is clamped to the nose of the crankshaft by friction rather than keyed to it, and under the loads a modified or hard-driven car puts through it that clamp can slip. When it does, the engine’s idea of where the crankshaft is stops matching where it actually is, which is why the fault it stores is a correlation fault rather than anything that names a part. That is the signature to recognise, and recognising it is the whole job — the same code on another BMW usually means a chain or a guide, and treating this engine that way costs an owner a timing job that was never the problem. So the first move is to read the freeze-frame data behind the fault and establish the engine’s history, in particular whether it has ever been remapped, before anything is dismantled. It is worth saying plainly that this is a known consequence of a design choice and not the sign of a neglected car.

How we establish it

The pattern is the diagnosis here, and it is worth an owner knowing it because the symptom looks far more alarming than it is. Smoke only at start-up, clearing in seconds, means oil has drained past a valve stem into the cylinder while the engine sat — it burns off in one go and then the engine runs cleanly. That is a seal, and it is a known item on this engine family rather than a sign of a worn engine. Smoke that continues under load, or that appears on the overrun coming off the throttle, is a different story and points at rings or at the turbochargers, which is a different job and a different price. We establish which by watching the engine start from cold ourselves rather than taking a description, and by running a leak-down test to see whether the cylinders hold. Telling those two apart correctly is the entire difference between a cylinder head job and an engine.

A gearbox warning and a car that will not select a gear, a pump that runs constantly or cycles every few seconds with the car standing, or changes that have become slow and clumsy in traffic.

How we establish it

Both of these gearboxes are usually condemned far too early, and in both cases for the same reason: the symptom is dramatic and the actual fault is often hydraulic rather than mechanical. SMG works an ordinary manual gearbox and clutch through a pump and a pressure accumulator, and an accumulator that has lost its charge produces exactly the presentation people describe as a failed gearbox — a pump that will not stop running, slow selection, a warning. That is a part, not a gearbox. The DCT likewise has a clutch pack with an adaptation that can be read and a mechatronic unit with pressures that can be logged, and a great many of them are one fluid service and one relearn from behaving properly. So the order of work here is fixed: read the stored faults, read the pressures and the adaptation values, and only then talk about what is worn. Nobody should be quoted a gearbox on the strength of a warning light.

How we establish it

This is the item that decides whether a particular E46 M3 is worth buying, and it is the one most often missed because it cannot be seen without lifting the car and knowing exactly where to look. The subframe carries the drive loads into the floor of the body at a small number of points, and on these cars those points can crack and eventually tear the panel around them. The symptom an owner notices is a clunk, which is why it is so often sold as bushes — and new bushes into a cracked floor is money spent on nothing. So it is inspected directly, from underneath, with the sealant cleaned back at the mounting points where it hides a crack, and we photograph what we find during a pre-purchase inspection because on this car it is the single most valuable thing the inspection produces. Found early it is a repair. Left alone it becomes bodywork.

A sudden loss of power with the car limited to a fraction of its output, often on one bank only, with a warning on the dash and a car that drives but refuses to rev.

How we establish it

These engines do not use a single throttle: each cylinder has its own, which is a large part of how they respond, and the throttles on each bank are driven by one electric actuator. When an actuator degrades, the engine loses control of that entire bank and puts itself into a limited mode — which is why the failure is so complete and so sudden, and why it affects half the engine rather than one cylinder. It is also why it is not a mystery: the fault the car stores names the bank, and the actuator’s position feedback can be read live and compared against what the engine is asking for. So this is one to diagnose with a scan tool and a test drive rather than by dismantling an intake. The reason it appears on this page at all is that it is often described to an owner as a serious engine fault, and the drive home in limited mode does nothing to argue with that — but the part that has failed is an actuator on the outside of the engine.

Questions we get asked about these

Do the rod bearings really need doing, or is that an internet story?

It is real, but the useful version is more precise than the story. The bearing shells in these engines run a tighter clearance than an ordinary engine’s, which is part of how they rev, and that makes them far less forgiving of long oil intervals and high oil temperatures — both of which describe how these cars are used here. What is not true is that every engine needs shells at a fixed distance. The right answer is measurement: an oil sample reports the bearing metals in parts per million, and two samples a few thousand kilometres apart show whether they are rising. That turns the most expensive decision an owner of one of these faces into a planned job or a clean bill of health. We are perfectly willing to tell you the engine is fine and take nothing apart.

My F80 M3 stored a timing correlation fault. Is that the chain?

On most BMWs that code means a chain or a guide. On this engine it usually does not, and mistaking the two is an expensive error. The timing sprocket on the S55 is clamped to the nose of the crankshaft by friction rather than located by a key, and under high load — particularly on a car that has been remapped — that clamp can slip, at which point the engine’s idea of where the crankshaft is no longer matches reality. The code is the same; the cause and the repair are not. So before anything is taken apart we read the freeze-frame data behind the fault and establish whether the car has ever been remapped, because that answer changes the diagnosis. If you are holding a quote for a timing job on an S55, it is worth asking which of the two they have established.

My M5 smokes when I start it in the morning. How bad is that?

If it is a cloud at start-up that clears within a few seconds and then never returns while you drive, that pattern points at valve stem seals — oil draining past a valve while the car sits, burning off in one go. On this engine family that is a known item and a cylinder head job, not an engine. What changes the answer entirely is smoke that carries on under load or that appears when you lift off the throttle, because that points at rings or at the turbochargers instead. Those two look similar to an owner and are nothing alike in cost, so we start the car from cold ourselves rather than work from a description, and run a leak-down test to see whether the cylinders hold pressure. You will get the actual answer before you get a price.

I have been quoted for a new SMG gearbox. Is that likely to be right?

It might be, but it is quoted far more often than it is true, and there is one thing to establish first. SMG is not a gearbox of its own — it is an ordinary manual gearbox and clutch, operated by hydraulics. A pump raises pressure, an accumulator stores it, and the system uses that pressure to select gears and work the clutch. When the accumulator loses its charge the pump runs constantly, selection goes slow, and the car puts a warning on the dash: the exact presentation of a failed gearbox, caused by a part. That should be checked, and the system pressures read, before anyone discusses a gearbox. Ask whoever quoted you whether they measured the pressure.

What should I check before buying an E46 M3?

Two things above everything else, and both need the car on a lift. The first is the rear subframe mounting points in the floor, which can crack on these cars and which nobody can assess from a driveway — the symptom is a clunk from the back, and it is very often sold to owners as worn bushes, so new bushes get fitted into a cracked floor and change nothing. The second is the condition of the rod bearings, which on an S54 is established by oil analysis rather than by listening. Everything else about the car — rust, service history, clutch, cooling system — matters in the ordinary way. Those two decide whether it is a car or a project, and both are exactly what a pre-purchase inspection is for.
