Toyota repair and servicing in Sharjah

This page is about the road cars: Camry, Corolla, Yaris, RAV4, Avalon, Previa, and the Hilux and Fortuner that work for a living. Almost nothing on it is a design scandal. Nearly everything that arrives here is the bill for something postponed — an interval stretched, a fluid nobody looked at, a filter left in through a summer — so the first question we ask is what the car has actually had done, not what is wrong with it.

Why we see these

Sharjah runs on these cars. A Camry or a Corolla here is rarely somebody’s second car — it does the school run, the Dubai commute, airport work, and a great many of them are taxis or ride-hail cars covering a year of ordinary distance in a few months. That duty is what shapes the work: this is what happens to a piston ring, a CVT fluid, a strut and a condenser when the engine never gets a cold start that stays cold, and when the last service went to whoever was nearest and cheapest that week. The other half of the floor is the Hilux and the Fortuner. They arrive with a load in the back, a diesel that was specified for one market and is being fed the fuel and the traffic of another, and an owner who needs the truck earning again tomorrow morning.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • The exact engine and the exact variant established before anything is ordered, because Toyota changed a great deal under identical bodywork. A 2AR-FE Camry, a 2GR-FE Aurion, a 1ZZ-FE Corolla, a later 2ZR-FE Corolla and an 8AR-FTS turbo four are five different service conversations wearing one badge.
  • CVT handled as its own kind of gearbox and not as an automatic. The K-series continuously variable units take a CVT fluid of their own, are filled inside a specified temperature window rather than to a mark on a stick, and are judged on fluid condition and take-up behaviour rather than on a distance reading.
  • Oil consumption investigated rather than topped up. Where an engine is using oil we want a measured interval between two checks, the plugs out, and compression and leak-down results cylinder by cylinder, because worn rings, a valve stem seal, a blocked breather and an external leak all present as the same low dipstick.
  • Diesel work that starts at the injector and the fuel rather than at the exhaust. On the 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV, injector correction values, rail pressure requested against actual, and return flow at each injector are read before anything downstream is blamed.
  • A dust interval rather than a book interval on the air filter and the cabin filter, because the figure in the handbook assumes air this country does not have, and a choked filter changes how the engine and the air conditioning both behave.
  • A road test with the air conditioning at full load, since half of what these cars are brought in for — CVT take-up, a compressor cutting in and out, an idle that sags at a junction — only shows itself when the engine is doing the work a Sharjah afternoon asks of it.

What actually comes in

Named at component level, with what the driver notices first and what we do to establish it is that and not something else that feels identical from the driving seat.

Oil consumption through the piston rings on the 2AR-FE four (Camry and RAV4)

How we establish it

An engine using oil without dropping it on the floor is either burning it or sending it out through the breather, and those are different repairs. We set a starting level, agree a distance, and check it again rather than estimating, and in the meantime the plugs come out, the PCV valve is checked, and compression and leak-down are read cylinder by cylinder. On the 2AR-FE the oil control rings are the known path, and the earliest sign is usually one plug that looks different from the other three. The 2GR-FE V6 can do the same thing at higher distances and is checked the same way.

A puff of blue smoke on the first start after the car has stood overnight, and a litre gone before the next service is due.

How we establish it

These are cars old enough that owners stop opening the bonnet, so the first job is separating consumption from a leak: a 1ZZ that has had a cam cover gasket weeping onto the exhaust manifold for a year smells and behaves much the same from the driving seat. If it is genuine consumption we check the PCV valve and the whole breather route before anything else, because a blocked one pushes oil past rings that are otherwise still serviceable. That is the cheap outcome and it is worth ruling in properly before an expensive one is discussed.

A sudden loss of oil, with oil across the engine bay and a trail behind the car, and usually no warning at all beforehand.

How we establish it

This is the one item on this page we treat as urgent rather than as maintenance. The earlier V6 carried a rubber section in the feed that supplies the cam timing control, and when that section lets go the engine loses its oil quickly rather than gradually. We look at what is actually fitted, because the later supply line is metal, and if the rubber one is still on the engine we say so in plain language instead of adding it to a list of recommendations. Where an engine has already been run low, bearing noise and compression get assessed before anybody talks about a hose.

A sweet smell after a run, a dried pink crust at the front of the engine, or the temperature needle sitting a little higher in traffic than it used to.

How we establish it

Coolant that goes missing without leaving a puddle is found with a pressure test on a cold engine, put under pressure and watched, rather than by hunting for a wet patch on a hot one. The pump on this V6 weeps from its drain hole long before it ever drips, and what it leaves behind is a dried deposit rather than a stain. We check the pump, the thermostat housing, the hose ends and the radiator seams in that order, and then name the one that is losing it instead of replacing the group and calling the job done.

Injectors and the exhaust after-treatment on the 1GD-FTV and 2GD-FTV Hilux and Fortuner

It shakes at idle and smokes more than it used to, it will not pull the way it did with a load on the back, or a warning about the exhaust filter appears and will not clear.

How we establish it

We start on the fuel side: injector correction values read cylinder by cylinder, rail pressure requested against actual under load, and return flow measured at each injector, because one leaking injector produces a shake, smoke and a filter that keeps loading, and replacing four when one is at fault is a common and expensive mistake. The exhaust filter question is genuinely different here from what it is in Europe and it is worth being straight about it: whether a DPF is fitted at all depends on the specification the truck was built to and the market it came through, so a locally supplied truck, a used import and a re-export can be three different exhaust systems under one badge. We establish what is physically on the vehicle before discussing it. Where a filter is fitted, short urban trips are the real problem — the regeneration cycle needs a sustained run to finish, and a truck that only ever does a few kilometres at a time never gives it one.

It shudders gently as I pull away from a standstill, or the revs rise and the car does not go with them.

How we establish it

Stored codes first, then the car is driven with live data on the screen, watching input and output shaft speed against engine speed, because a slipping belt-and-pulley unit and a shudder from the launch device feel identical to the driver and are not remotely the same repair. Then the fluid: this gearbox takes a CVT fluid of its own and is filled inside a temperature window, not to a mark, and fluid that comes out dark and smelling cooked tells us something a distance reading cannot. Where the unit is already past the point where fresh fluid helps, we say that rather than selling a service that will not fix it.

Electric power steering column — the assist motor and torque sensor on Corolla and Yaris

The steering goes heavy for a moment, or stays heavy for the rest of the journey, and a warning light comes on with it.

How we establish it

These cars assist the steering with an electric motor on the column instead of a hydraulic pump, so there is no belt, no pump and no fluid to inspect, and a heavy steering complaint here is an electrical diagnosis from the start. We read what the steering module has stored, check supply and ground at its connector, and watch torque sensor output while the wheel is turned by hand. A fault that comes and goes is very often the connector or the loom where it flexes at the column, and that is worth finding before a complete column assembly is put on a quote.

The air is cold at the start of the trip and warms up while I sit in traffic, or it cools properly on one side only.

How we establish it

Vent temperature is read inside the cabin with the car standing and the system given time to settle, pressures are read on both sides, and the compressor clutch is watched to see whether it is cycling normally or dropping out and staying out as the engine bay heats up. A cabin filter that has spent a Sharjah year in place restricts airflow enough to be mistaken for a refrigerant problem, and it costs nothing to look at first. Toyota air conditioning is not exempt from this climate; it is simply asked to run at full load for most of the year, and nothing here gets a top-up until we know where the last charge went.

It knocks over speed bumps, it keeps moving after the bump has passed, and the front tyres are wearing unevenly.

How we establish it

The car goes up with the wheels hanging and every joint is levered under load — the front bush and the rear bush of each lower arm separately, the drop links, the track rod ends, and the strut top mounts turned by hand on lock. On a car doing taxi or ride-hail distances the struts are usually simply worn out rather than broken, and that is a different conversation from a failed part: we will tell you which of the two you have. Uneven tyre wear is traced back to the geometry and to what is loose, rather than blamed on the tyre and left there.

Questions we get asked about these

It has never broken down. Is there anything worth doing?

Servicing, on time, to the severe-use column rather than the long one, and that is the whole answer. Short trips in traffic with the air conditioning at full load is the manufacturer’s own definition of severe use, and it is what almost every car on this page does every day. Oil and filter early, air and cabin filters early because of dust, coolant and brake fluid on the calendar rather than on the odometer, gearbox fluid looked at rather than assumed to be sealed for life. Done on that footing, most of these cars never reach the repair pages of this site.

My Camry uses oil. Is that normal or is the engine finished?

Neither answer should be given over a counter. Some oil use is within what any engine does; a 2AR-FE that empties itself between services is not that, and the difference is a measurement, not an opinion. We set a level, agree a distance, and read it again, and alongside that we check the breather and the PCV valve — because a blocked breather pushes oil past rings that are otherwise fine and is far cheaper to correct. Compression and leak-down results tell us whether we are looking at rings, at valve stem seals, or at neither. Only then is it worth discussing what to do about it.

Does my Hilux have a DPF, and do I need to worry about it here?

That depends on the specification your truck was built to and the market it came through, and it is not something to answer from the model name. A locally supplied 1GD-FTV, a used import and a re-exported truck can carry three different exhaust arrangements, so the first thing we do is look at what is actually on the vehicle and what the engine module reports. Where a filter is fitted, the thing that causes trouble in this country is duty rather than climate: a regeneration cycle needs a sustained run at road speed to finish, and a truck that does short urban trips all week never completes one, so the filter loads up and the warnings start. That is a driving pattern problem with a real answer, and it is worth understanding before anyone suggests removing anything.

Is the CVT in a Corolla or RAV4 something to be afraid of?

Not in itself. What gets these units into trouble is being serviced as though they were ordinary automatics, or not serviced at all because somebody read the word sealed. They take a CVT fluid of their own, they are filled inside a temperature window rather than to a mark on a dipstick, and their condition shows in how the car takes up from a standstill long before a code is stored. A gentle shudder pulling away is the early warning and it is worth acting on. We will also tell you when a unit is past the point where a fluid change is going to help, because selling one at that stage is selling a service that changes nothing.

Do I need to go to the agency, or can you do the work?

If the car is still inside its factory warranty, go to the agency and we will say so rather than take the booking, because anything that might be a claim belongs there. Outside that, the question worth asking is not who has which badge on the wall but whether the specific job on your car needs a module programmed against a system only the franchise can reach. Some do. Where that is the case we name it in advance rather than discovering it with your car in pieces.
