Lexus service and repair in Sharjah

A Lexus shares a great deal of its mechanical parts bin with cars that cost a third as much, and then behaves nothing like them. What brings an LS, an RX, a GS or an IS through the door is almost always one of the systems the cheaper car never had: air struts, adaptive damping, a Mark Levinson amplifier, a hybrid drive with three separate cooling circuits, or an interior surface that has been baked from above every summer of its life. So this page is mostly about electronics and comfort systems, because on these cars that is where the money and the frustration are.

Why we see these

Almost every Lexus that reaches us in the northern Emirates is with its second or third keeper and long past the point where a franchise sees it, bought precisely because it is inexpensive for the car it is. What the buyer inherits along with it is a specification: an LS 460 standing on air at all four corners, an RX or a GS with adaptive variable suspension, a hybrid carrying a transaxle, an inverter and a battery pack that each need cooling of their own, and audio and navigation modules worth real money on their own. None of that fails because it was built badly. It fails because it is old, and because heat and fine dust here age a compressor, a cooling fan, an amplifier and a trim surface considerably faster than the climate any of them were drawn for.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • The model and the powertrain established before anything else. A 1UR-FE LS, a 2UR-GSE F car, an RX 350 and an RX 450h share an interior and very little under the bonnet, and a suspension answer for one of them is wrong for the next.
  • Suspension diagnosed as a system rather than as a corner. Where a car has air struts or AVS dampers, ride height and damper command are read as live data from the suspension module first, because a low corner can be a leaking strut, a tired compressor, a sticking valve or a height sensor that is simply reporting the wrong number.
  • An honest line drawn around the high-voltage side. We read hybrid fault codes, look at the battery block voltages the module reports, check the pack cooling fan and its intake duct, and tell you exactly what the car is saying. Work that requires a high-voltage licence we have not told you we hold is work we name and refer, not work we attempt.
  • Audio and multimedia treated as a diagnosis instead of a swap. A Mark Levinson system fails at the amplifier far more often than at a speaker, and the amplifier is nowhere near where most people look first.
  • Trim and leather work done here rather than sent out, because on these cars the dashboard surface, the door cards and the seat hides are the fault itself, not the cosmetics around it.
  • Coolant and accessory drive work on the UR-series V8s planned as one job. These engines run a timing chain, so what has to come off to reach the water pump is the accessory drive, and the belt, tensioner and idlers go back renewed or the car comes back for them separately.

What actually comes in

Named at component level, with what the driver notices first and what we do to establish it is that and not something else that feels identical from the driving seat.

A coolant smell after parking, a dried stain low at the front of the engine, or a short squeal on a cold start that goes away once it warms.

How we establish it

The cooling system is pressurised cold, held and watched, and the pump is judged at its weep hole rather than by whatever is on the floor. These engines are chain-driven, so the pump is reached from the accessory drive side, and while the belt is off the tensioner and every idler pulley is spun by hand, because a bearing that is dry today is a roadside stop next month. We also look at the coolant itself: a V8 that has been topped up with water instead of the long-life coolant it was built around corrodes quietly from the inside, and it shows in what comes out of the radiator.

How we establish it

Oil leaving a V8 high up travels a long way before it lands, which is how the wrong gasket gets replaced. We clean the area, run the engine to temperature and locate the origin instead of sealing the nearest thing to the stain. These engines are sealed at the cover and the cam towers with a formed-in-place compound rather than a cut gasket, so the repair is a stripping and resealing job that is worth describing to you honestly before you agree to it, rather than halfway through when the front of the engine is already apart.

It is sitting low on one corner in the morning, it takes a long time to lift, or a suspension message appears on the screen and stays.

How we establish it

Height is read corner by corner as live data from the suspension module, then the system is run up and the compressor timed, because a compressor working long and hard is usually a symptom of a leak somewhere else rather than the fault itself. The struts are checked with the car raised, at the bag and at the top seal. Where a compressor has spent months fighting a leaking strut it is generally finished too, and we say that before you pay for one and come back for the other a fortnight later.

The ride has gone hard and stays hard, the drive mode selector makes no difference at all, or a suspension message keeps coming back.

How we establish it

Each damper on this system carries a small actuator the car commands, so it is an electrical diagnosis before it is a mechanical one: codes from the suspension module, then each actuator commanded on its own while its current draw is watched. That separates a damper that is never being asked to change from one that is being asked and not answering. A damper that has simply lost its fluid is found the ordinary way, by hand with the wheels hanging. Both faults feel the same over a speed bump and they are nowhere near the same bill.

How we establish it

The inverter has a cooling circuit of its own, with its own electric pump and its own reservoir, quite separate from the engine coolant, and a pump that has stopped or a circuit with air trapped in it will shut the hybrid system down to protect what it is cooling. We read the stored hybrid codes and the inverter coolant temperature in live data, check the level in the correct reservoir rather than the obvious one, and confirm whether the pump is actually running. Where the answer turns out to be inside the transaxle or on the high-voltage side of the car, we say so plainly and tell you where it should go — that is not something to be approximate about.

The fan behind the rear seat is much louder than it used to be, or a hybrid warning appears on a hot afternoon and clears once the car has cooled overnight.

How we establish it

This is the most regionally specific fault on this page and one of the few with a cheap ending. The pack is cooled by cabin air drawn through an intake near the rear seat, and in this climate that intake, the duct behind it and the fan blades themselves silt up with the fine dust that gets into everything. We look at the intake and the fan, and alongside that we read the battery block voltages and the pack temperatures the module reports, so we can tell you whether this is a cooling problem that cleaning will fix or a pack that is already out of balance and only being exposed by the heat. Those two are told apart by the data, not by how loud the fan is.

The pedal has gone long or unusually hard, a motor runs under the bonnet and keeps running, and a brake warning comes up with a repeating chime.

How we establish it

Braking on these cars is blended between regeneration and the hydraulic side and managed by an actuator with its own pump and accumulator, so a pedal complaint is read out of the brake module rather than guessed at from the pedal. We check the stored codes, watch accumulator pressure and how long the pump runs to build it, and establish whether what is failing is the actuator itself, a wheel speed signal feeding it, or fluid that has never been changed. It is an expensive assembly and it is also one of the parts most often replaced on suspicion, which is exactly why it is worth being certain first.

One speaker has gone silent or crackles, the sound cuts out and comes back on its own, or the screen restarts while I am driving.

How we establish it

Before a speaker is condemned we move channels at the amplifier and see whether the fault follows the channel or stays with the speaker. That takes minutes and settles the argument. The amplifier on these cars sits where heat and damp both collect and is a far more common failure than the drivers in the doors, which is the opposite of where most people start. A head unit that restarts on its own gets supply and ground checked at the module, along with any accessory a previous owner spliced into the wrong feed — in a car of this age that is a more likely story than a module failing by itself.

The top of the dashboard has gone sticky or oddly shiny, it takes a fingerprint, and the top edge has started to crack and lift.

How we establish it

This is a material failure and not a cleaning problem, and nothing sold in a spray bottle reverses it — a car parked outside here has that surface cooked from above every day of the summer, and certain Lexus interiors of a particular period are much worse for it than others. We will tell you which of the realistic options applies: a replacement panel, a recovered one, or leaving it alone. We will also say whether the crack is at a seam that is going to keep travelling or whether it has stabilised, so the decision is yours on real information rather than on a quote for the largest version of the job.

Questions we get asked about these

Is a Lexus just a Toyota underneath, and can it be serviced like one?

The routine servicing overlaps considerably and there is no point pretending otherwise. What does not overlap is everything the badge was actually charging for: air struts, adaptive dampers, the hybrid cooling circuits, the amplifier, the seat and climate modules. Those are where these cars cost money in their second decade, and they are diagnosed from module data rather than by feel. So yes to the oil and the filters being familiar work, and no to the idea that the car can be approached as though those systems were not there.

Do you work on hybrids?

We diagnose them and we are careful about where that stops. Reading the hybrid fault codes, looking at the battery block voltages and pack temperatures the module reports, checking the pack cooling fan and its intake duct, testing the inverter cooling circuit and its pump, and telling you exactly what the car is reporting — that is all diagnostic work and we do it. Anything that requires working on the high-voltage system itself needs a licence, and we are not going to imply we hold one in order to keep the car here. Where that is the line, we name it and tell you where the job belongs.

The LS is sitting low on one side. Can the air suspension be converted to normal springs?

Before that question is worth answering, find out what is actually wrong. A low corner on an LS 460 can be a leaking strut, a valve that is not holding, a compressor that no longer builds pressure, or a height sensor reporting a number the car then acts on. Those are four different costs and only one of them is the expensive one. We read the heights the car sees, time the compressor, and check each strut with the wheels off the ground. If after that you still want to discuss a conversion, we will talk about what it does to the ride and to the systems that expect a height signal, honestly, rather than selling it as an upgrade.

My dashboard has gone sticky. Is there a product that fixes it?

No, and anyone selling you one is selling you a few weeks. The surface itself has broken down under years of direct heat, which is why it is soft and shiny rather than merely dirty, and why cleaning it makes it worse for a while and then the same. The real options are a replacement panel where one can be sourced, recovering the panel in a material that will survive this climate, or deciding to live with it. We do the trim work here rather than sending it out, and we would rather tell you the cheap answer does not exist than take money for it.

Are you a Lexus centre?

No. Nobody appointed us, and the line at the bottom of this page says so at the same size as everything else. What matters for your car is narrower and more useful than a badge on a wall: whether the fault gets located instead of guessed, whether the module that owns a system is actually read, and whether we tell you in advance when a job needs programming against a system only the franchise can reach. Some jobs do. We would rather name that before your car is apart than discover it afterwards.
