GMC repair and service in Sharjah

What separates a GMC from its Chevrolet twin in a workshop is rarely the engine. It is the duty. A Sierra here has a tow bar bolted to it, a tray in the bed and a caravan behind it on Fridays; a Yukon XL carries seven people and a roof load to Oman. So the parts that give up are the ones carrying the weight — the rear springs and the levelling shocks, the hub bearings, the axle, the eight-speed under load — and those are what this page is about.

Why we see these

A large share of the GMCs on a Sharjah forecourt arrived as North American used stock rather than through a regional showroom, and that shows up in the first hour of any job. Trim levels, tow packages, rear levelling and even the radio module differ between a US build and a Gulf one, so parts get ordered against the VIN rather than the model year. The second thing that shapes the work is that a pickup in this country is very often a working vehicle with somebody else’s wiring on it: a brake controller spliced in at a service centre, a reversing camera added, lights on the roof. And the surface matters. A truck that spends its week on the Emirates Road fully laden and its weekend on a graded sand track loads a rear spring pack and a wheel bearing in a way a city car never does, which is why those are the components we assume are tired until they prove otherwise.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • A lift and stands rated for a laden pickup, and a jack placed on the axle rather than under a sill. A Sierra with a tray and a tow hitch is not the weight the workshop manual drawing shows.
  • Rear ride height measured and the levelling system relearned after any rear shock or height sensor is disturbed, so the compressor is not left chasing a target it can never reach.
  • The eight-speed filled to a level at a stated fluid temperature. Several of these have no dipstick at all, the level is set at the check plug with the fluid at temperature, and a box filled cold is a box filled wrong.
  • Tow wiring treated as vehicle wiring. The seven-pin socket, the trailer module, the brake controller gain and the earth points behind the rear bumper are part of the electrical system, not an accessory somebody added to the outside of it.
  • Axle and transfer case fluid, a fresh cover gasket and the correct friction modifier where a limited-slip differential is fitted, because a truck that has been towing has cooked that oil whatever the distance says.
  • A proper hub puller and the torque figures for the hub bolts. A four-wheel-drive front hub that has been in this climate for eight years does not come off by hand, and a bearing fitted loose is a bearing fitted twice.

What actually comes in

Named at component level, with what the driver notices first and what we do to establish it is that and not something else that feels identical from the driving seat.

The back of the truck sits low and stays low, or the compressor can be heard running for a long time after the engine is switched off, or one side looks lower than the other on a flat floor.

How we establish it

A truck sitting low at the back has three candidate causes and they are told apart before anything is bought. We measure the height at both rear corners on a level floor, read the height sensor value the module is actually seeing, and command the compressor and the exhaust solenoid to watch the vehicle rise and settle. A sensor reporting a height the truck is not at makes a healthy system run itself to death; a leaking air shock makes the compressor run on; a settled or cracked leaf makes no electrical complaint at all. On Denali trim the rear dampers are the magnetically controlled type shared with the Cadillac range, so if the fault turns out to be in the damper electronics rather than the levelling air circuit we say so and treat it as an electrical diagnosis, not a spring one.

Intermediate steering shaft splines and the upper shaft coupling — clunk on turn-in

A single clunk felt through the steering wheel itself when you first turn it after moving off, or over a joint in the road, and nothing at all when the car is standing still.

How we establish it

This is the fault most often sold as a suspension repair on these trucks, because a clunk gets blamed on the front end by default. The distinguishing feature is where it is felt: a worn intermediate shaft is felt in the rim of the wheel under your hands, not in the floor or the seat. One person turns the wheel back and forth through the free play while another has a hand on the shaft at the joint under the bonnet, and the movement is either there or it is not. That takes minutes and it stops a set of ball joints being fitted to a car whose joints are fine.

A hard bang between second and third or a jerk when it downshifts to a stop, and a low-speed judder that the driver describes as the truck being unhappy in traffic.

How we establish it

Eight ratios means eight chances to feel a shift, and this box is unusually informative in live data about which one it is unhappy with. We log shift adaptation values, line pressure and slip across each gear change on a road test rather than in the bay, because a bang that only appears with a warm box and a loaded truck will not show itself idling on a ramp. Fluid condition and the level set at temperature come first in every case. Where the adaptations have been reset by somebody else the box also has to be given the chance to relearn before its behaviour means anything, and that is a drive, not a button.

A hum from the front that rises with speed and changes as you sweep the wheel left and right, or an ABS and traction control light that comes on above a certain speed and clears when the engine is restarted.

How we establish it

On these the bearing and the speed sensor are one sealed unit, which is why a noise and a warning light so often arrive together and why the noise gets ignored until the light forces the issue. We compare the four wheel speed signals in live data while the vehicle is driven — a sensor inside a failing bearing drops out at speed as the gap opens up, and the signal shows it — and we check the hub for play and roughness with the weight off. On a heavy four-wheel-drive front corner that has been through this heat the hub and its bolts usually have to be freed rather than undone, which belongs in the estimate rather than in a phone call afterwards.

Trailer tow package — the seven-pin socket, the trailer lamp module and the integrated brake controller gain

The trailer lights do odd things or take the truck’s own lights down with them, the dash reports a trailer that is not connected, or the brake controller reads no trailer when one is plainly hitched.

How we establish it

Almost every fault we see here is in the connection rather than in the vehicle, and the order of testing matters: the socket and its earth first, then the module, then the truck. We check for voltage and a clean earth at each pin of the socket with the circuits commanded on individually rather than by plugging a trailer in and watching, because a shared earth corroded behind the rear bumper will make three unrelated circuits misbehave at once and look like a module. Where a controller has been retrofitted by somebody else we trace what it was spliced into before condemning anything, since a brake controller wired to the wrong feed reports exactly like a broken one.

Knock retard, intake valve deposits and fuel quality on the 6.2 L86 and L87 V8 under sustained towing load

The big engine feels flat pulling a load up a long incline, the gearbox hunts between ratios, and fuel consumption has gone up without any warning light appearing.

How we establish it

The 6.2 differs from its smaller relative in exactly the situation that matters here: it runs a higher compression ratio and asks for a higher octane fuel, and when it does not get it the engine protects itself by pulling ignition timing rather than by setting a fault. That is why there is no light. We log knock sensor activity and the ignition timing the engine is actually running against the timing it wants, under load on a road test, alongside fuel trims. Because this engine injects directly into the cylinder there is no fuel washing over the back of the intake valves, so deposits build there with time and towing duty, and that shows in airflow and trim data before it shows as a misfire. Naming which of the two it is decides whether this is a fuel and driving question or a cleaning job.

Rear axle pinion seal, gear whine and the differential fluid after a season of towing

A whine from behind you that changes pitch with road speed and is different on the overrun than it is under power, and a wet patch on the underside of the axle nose where the propshaft meets it.

How we establish it

A noise from the back of a pickup is one of the easiest things to misattribute, because tyres, a wheel bearing and a differential all hum. We separate them by how the noise responds: a differential changes between drive and overrun, a bearing changes with cornering load, and tyre noise changes with the surface and not with either. Then we drain a sample of the axle oil and look at what comes out of it, because heat and towing break that oil down long before the calendar suggests, and metal in the sample changes the conversation entirely. A weeping pinion seal on its own is a small job; a weeping seal that has been left until the oil is low is not, and the sample is how we tell you which one you have.

A sharp ticking for the first minute from one side of the engine bay that fades as the engine warms, and sometimes a faint smell of exhaust at a standstill with the windows down.

How we establish it

A tick that goes away as the engine warms is the opposite signature to the one that stays, and the difference matters because one is an exhaust leak closing up as metal expands and the other is a valvetrain problem that does not care how hot anything is. This one is found by listening along the manifold flange while the engine is cold and by looking for the soot trail a leak leaves on the head and the manifold face. Broken or stretched manifold bolts are common on trucks that tow, because that is the duty that cycles the manifold through the widest temperature range, and several of them break where the head can be reached but the broken stud cannot. We establish that before quoting, rather than discovering it with the truck in pieces.

Questions we get asked about these

My Sierra is a US import rather than a Gulf car. Does that change anything?

It changes what we order and what we expect to find, so it is worth telling us at the start rather than after a part arrives. Build, trim and options are read from the VIN, and on these trucks the options are not cosmetic: whether the rear suspension self-levels, whether a tow package and a brake controller were fitted at the factory or spliced in later, and which modules are on the bus all follow from it. A US build also arrives having spent its life in a different climate, so the cooling stack, the air conditioning and the battery deserve a look on their own terms rather than on the assumption that a Gulf-specification car is what we are looking at.

The rear sits low and I can hear the compressor running for ages. Is it the shocks or the springs?

That is the right question and there are actually three answers, which is why it is worth measuring before buying. A compressor that runs on and on is usually filling something that is leaking, and that points at an air shock or a line. A height sensor reporting a figure the truck is not at will make a perfectly good system work itself to death chasing a target. And a leaf pack that has settled over years of carrying weight will sit low and say nothing electrically at all. We measure both rear corners on a level floor, read what the sensor is telling the module, and command the system up and down before a single part is ordered.

There is a clunk when I turn the wheel. Is that ball joints?

Not necessarily, and on these trucks it very often is not. The question we ask first is where you feel it. A clunk you feel in the rim of the steering wheel under your hands, at the moment you begin to turn and not over bumps, points at the intermediate shaft between the column and the steering gear rather than at anything holding the wheel up. A clunk you feel through the floor or the seat over a bump is a different shortlist. We check the shaft with one person moving the wheel and another hand on the joint before anybody quotes front end components, because those are two very different invoices.

I was told the eight-speed is filled for life and never needs a fluid change. Is that right?

We will not tell you an interval that is not in your own service book, and we will not invent one to sell a service. What we will say is what we can measure: this gearbox runs hot in stop-start traffic in this climate, hotter again behind a trailer, and we read its fluid temperature live rather than guessing at it. Fluid is then judged on colour, smell and what comes out on the magnet, not on a number. If it is in good condition we say so and you keep your money. If it is dark and smells cooked, we tell you that and let you decide, and we will also tell you honestly that on a box with a shudder already present a fluid change is not guaranteed to cure it.

I use the truck for towing. What is actually worth checking before a long trip?

Four things, in this order. The transmission fluid and its cooler circuit, because heat is what shortens an automatic behind a trailer and distance is not. The rear axle oil, for the same reason and because a sample tells us more in two minutes than any mileage figure. The rear suspension and the levelling system, so the truck is sitting level with the load on rather than nose-up. And the tow electrics as a system: the socket pins, the earths behind the bumper and the brake controller actually seeing the trailer. None of that is dramatic and all of it is cheaper to look at in a bay than on the hard shoulder.
