RAM repair and servicing in Sharjah

The thing that makes a RAM ride the way it does is also the thing that brings it here. The 1500 carries its rear axle on coil springs rather than leaf springs, and a great many of them add air springs and a compressor on top of that — so the back of this truck has a control module, height sensors and a dryer where a rival has two lumps of steel. It is a better ride and it is more to go wrong, and most of what follows on this page is the consequence of that trade.

Why we see these

A pickup in this emirate does two jobs and often both in the same week: it works, and it takes a family out at the weekend. That combination is what wears these trucks. Towing a boat or a trailer up a slip road at noon in August loads the rear axle, the axle oil and the cooling side of the driveline far harder than the distance on the clock suggests, and then the same truck spends five days doing short runs where nothing gets properly hot and the air system cycles up and down at every stop. Sand is the other constant: the compressor for the air suspension pulls its air through a dryer, and a dryer asked to work in fine dust is a dryer with a limited life. The engine bay is worth a sentence of its own, because the parts channel depends on it entirely. Most of what arrives here is petrol — the 5.7 V8 through the DS and DT generations, and now a 3.0 twin-turbocharged straight-six on the newest trucks. The 3.0 EcoDiesel was never a regional engine, so on the rare occasion one is in front of us it is an American truck that somebody imported, and that is a parts conversation before it is a repair conversation. The other thing we check before ordering anything is which 1500 it is: the older DS and the newer DT were sold new alongside each other under one name, and they are not the same truck underneath.

What this make asks of a workshop

  • Ride height read from the module, not judged by eye at the wheel arch. The suspension module holds a target and a measured value for each corner, and the gap between them is the diagnosis. A truck that looks level can be running two sensors that both read wrong, and a truck that looks low can have a healthy system waiting on a compressor that is being commanded off because it has overheated.
  • The air system depressurised and put into service mode before the wheels come off. These trucks will try to level themselves while they are on a lift. The correct procedure is in the module, not in the hands, and skipping it damages parts and occasionally the person doing the job.
  • Axle oil treated as a towing item rather than a lifetime fill. Sustained towing in this heat is what finishes a rear axle, and the oil in it — particularly where there is a limited-slip or an electronic locker with friction material in the carrier — is a service with an interval that gets shorter the more the truck tows. We ask what it pulls and how often before we advise on it.
  • Body and bed electrics traced at the connector. The cargo box lids, their lock actuators and the lighting in them run harnesses through hinges and along the bed rail where they flex and where water and dust collect, and they are diagnosed by testing the circuit at the connector rather than by fitting a module because two unrelated things stopped working.
  • A road test with load in mind. A shift complaint on a truck that tows is judged with the gearbox warm on a real gradient, not idling in the yard, because the strategy the truck uses loaded is not the one it uses empty.
  • The exact truck identified before a part is ordered. The older DS and the newer DT 1500 were sold new at the same time under the same name, the 2500 and 3500 do not share a rear suspension with each other, and an order placed off the model name alone is an order we check again before it is opened.

How we establish it

The module holds a target height and a measured height for each corner, and that pair of numbers is the whole diagnosis — so the first thing we do is read them rather than look at the truck. A compressor that runs long is usually not a failed compressor: it is a system leaking somewhere, or a sensor reporting a height that is not true so the compressor never reaches its target and eventually overheats and is commanded off. We hold pressure in the system and find the leak, test each sensor against the actual measured corner, and check the dryer, because fine dust here shortens a dryer’s life and a saturated dryer puts moisture into the whole system. Replacing a compressor without finding what made it work that hard buys you the same repair again.

How we establish it

This is the distinction worth understanding about a RAM: the 1500 locates its rear axle with five links and coil springs, so there is a track bar holding the axle sideways and bushed links holding it fore and aft — parts that simply do not exist on a leaf-sprung pickup, where the springs do that job themselves. A worn track bar bush is felt as the back of the truck moving across the lane, which drivers almost always report as a steering problem at the front. The truck goes on a lift with the axle loaded and each link and its bushes are levered individually. It is also why the heavy-duty trucks have to be identified before parts are ordered — the 2500 also uses coils at the back while the 3500 uses leaf springs, and the rear ends are not interchangeable across the range.

Electronic shift module — the rotary gear dial, the shift interlock and the park release

A Service Shifter message, the dial turning without the gear changing, the truck refusing to come out of park with your foot on the brake, or a no-start where everything else looks alive.

How we establish it

There is no cable between that dial and the gearbox. The dial is a sensor, a module reads it, a separate interlock physically locks the dial until the brake switch and the transmission agree, and only then is a gear requested. So a truck stuck in park is at least four different faults wearing the same face: the brake light switch, the interlock solenoid, the shifter module itself, or a gearbox that is not reporting the range it is in. We test the brake switch and its circuit first because it is the cheapest and the most common, then read what the shift module and the transmission control unit each believe the selected range to be. Where the two disagree, the answer is in the wiring between them far more often than in the dial the owner has been turning.

Electronically locking rear differential and the axle oil under sustained towing load

A whine from behind that changes when you lift off, a locker that will not engage or will not release, a burnt smell after towing, or oil weeping from the pinion or from the back of the axle housing.

How we establish it

The thing that kills a rear axle on a truck here is not distance, it is heat under load — a loaded slip road in summer puts more into that oil in ten minutes than a month of commuting. We ask what the truck tows and how often before anything else, then take an oil sample and look at it and smell it rather than reading the service book. A whine that changes between drive and overrun points at the pinion and ring set and its bearing preload; a whine that does not change is more often a tyre or a wheel bearing, and we say so. Where a locker is fitted, we command it from the diagnostic side and watch it engage and release, because a locker that has been dragging is also a locker that has been cooking the oil around it.

A box that will not unlock with the key fob, one lid that locks and the other that does not, water standing in the bottom of a box after a wash, or the box lights staying on and flattening the battery.

How we establish it

These are lockable boxes built into the bed sides, which means there is a wiring harness running through a hinge and along the bed rail in a place that flexes, gets washed and collects dust. Most of the complaints here are that harness or the drain rather than the lock motor everybody assumes. We test the actuator circuit at its connector for supply, ground and command, flex the loom at the hinge while watching the signal, and clear and check the drain tubes, because a box holding water is a box whose electrics are on a clock. A parasitic drain that appeared at the same time as a box fault is nearly always the box lighting staying live, and that is found with a current draw test rather than by disconnecting things one at a time.

A dead spot in the middle of the steering that you keep correcting on the motorway, the truck wandering when loaded, a knock felt through the wheel over a ridge, or fluid weeping down the chassis rail from the box.

How we establish it

The heavy trucks steer through a gear box with a sector shaft and a pitman arm rather than through a rack, and that layout wears in a way a rack does not: lash inside the box, play at the pitman arm and at the joint it drives, and a damper that has stopped doing its job. Because several parts in that chain produce the same vague feel, it is diagnosed by having one person move the wheel a few degrees each way at rest while another watches each joint in turn from underneath, so the play is attributed to a component and not to the steering in general. Adjusting lash in the box is a last step, not a first one, and we say when a box is worn out rather than adjusting it tighter to get the truck out of the door.

The 3.0 EcoDiesel V6, on the few privately imported trucks that have one

A rattle at idle from a cold start, a warning about the exhaust after-treatment, reduced power on a hot afternoon, or an oil level that keeps climbing on the dipstick.

How we establish it

We will be honest about this one before anything else: the diesel was not a regional engine, so almost every RAM here is petrol, and a truck with this engine has been imported by its owner. That does not make the work harder but it makes the parts slower, and that belongs in the conversation at booking rather than on day four. On the engine itself, the pattern here is the pattern of any modern diesel doing short urban runs in heat — an after-treatment system that never gets hot enough to complete a regeneration, fuel finding its way into the sump through repeated aborted attempts, and injector correction values that tell you which cylinder is contributing and which is not. We read the soot loading and the regeneration history, test the fuel rail pressure requested against actual while the fault is happening, and check the oil for dilution before recommending a single part.

A screen that reboots on its own, a black screen with the audio still playing, the climate controls on the screen not responding while the physical buttons still work, or the reversing camera failing to appear.

How we establish it

On this generation a great deal of the truck runs through that screen, including climate functions, so a display fault reads to the owner as three separate faults at once. The unit behind it is a computer with its own software level and its own power and network connections, and the first thing worth knowing is whether it is rebooting because of itself, because of a supply that is dropping, or because something else on the data network is dragging it down. We check the software level the truck is running and whether it is current, test supply and ground at the module under load rather than at rest, and look at the network as a whole before a screen is priced. A camera that does not appear is checked at the tailgate loom first, where the harness flexes every time the tailgate drops.

Questions we get asked about these

The dash says Service Air Suspension. Does the whole system have to be replaced?

Almost never. That message means the module could not reach a target height it was asked for, and there are several ordinary reasons for that: a leak at a fitting or an air spring, a height sensor whose linkage has come loose or whose reading has drifted, a dryer that is saturated after years in dust, or a compressor that has been asked to run so long it overheated and was switched off to protect itself. We read the target and measured height for each corner, hold pressure in the system to find the leak, and test each sensor against what the corner actually measures. Replacing a compressor without finding what overworked it is how the same fault comes back in a few months.

My truck will not come out of park. Is that the gearbox?

Usually not, and this is a good example of a cheap fault wearing an expensive face. There is no cable between the dial and the gearbox: the dial is a sensor, a module reads it, and a separate interlock physically holds the dial locked until the brake switch and the transmission both agree it is safe to move. So the first suspect is the brake light switch and its circuit, which is inexpensive and common. After that it is the interlock itself, then the shift module, and only then anything inside the gearbox. We test in that order and tell you which one it was.

Do you work on the EcoDiesel, and is it hard to get parts here?

We do, and yes, the parts take longer. The diesel was not a regional engine, so practically every RAM delivered new here is petrol and any EcoDiesel in Sharjah has come in as a private import. That has no effect on how the work is done, but it does mean a component that would be on a shelf for a 5.7 has to be brought in for this. We would rather tell you that when you book, with a realistic wait attached, than have you find out on the fourth day with the truck on a ramp.

The back of the truck feels loose over bumps. Is that the air springs?

It might be, but there is a more likely answer that is particular to this truck. The 1500 holds its rear axle on five links and coil springs, so there is a track bar keeping the axle located sideways and bushed links keeping it located fore and aft — parts a leaf-sprung pickup does not have at all. When the track bar bush wears, the back of the truck moves across the lane over a ridge, and drivers usually describe that as a steering problem at the front. The truck goes on a lift with the axle loaded and each link is levered in turn, so you get a named part rather than a guess between the air system and the rear end.

Does it matter which RAM 1500 I have when you order parts?

It matters a great deal, and it is a common way for an order to go wrong. The older DS generation and the newer DT generation were sold new at the same time, under the same name, on the same forecourt, and they are different trucks underneath. On top of that the 2500 and 3500 do not share a rear suspension with each other. So we start with the chassis number rather than with the model year, and where a part could belong to either truck we check the number a second time before the box is opened. It costs a few minutes and it saves a day.
