Reading the warning lights that matter

Some of them mean stop, now, on the hard shoulder. Some mean book it in next week. One of them means both, depending on whether it is steady or flashing — and that is the single most useful thing on this page.

A dashboard lamp is a sentence written in a language nobody teaches. It is worth learning the grammar of it, because the difference between the wrong response and the right one is sometimes the difference between a repair and an engine.

The colour is the instruction

Warning lamps are standardised internationally, under ISO 2575, which is maintained by ISO’s road vehicles committee and is currently in its ninth edition. It defines the colours, and its definitions are more precise than the folklore:

  • Red — “danger to persons or very serious damage to equipment, immediate or imminent”.
  • Yellow or amber — “caution, outside normal operating limits, vehicle system malfunction, damage to vehicle likely, or other condition which can produce hazard in the longer term”.
  • Green — “safe, normal operating condition”.

Read the red definition again. “Immediate or imminent” is doing real work in that sentence. A red lamp is not the car asking for attention at your convenience.

The red ones: stop

Oil pressure — and why it is not the oil light you think it is

The single most expensive misunderstanding on any dashboard is this one, and Nissan clear it up in one sentence in their own owner’s manual: “The engine oil pressure warning light is not designed to indicate a low oil level.” It indicates a loss of oil PRESSURE — that oil is no longer being delivered to the bearings at the pressure the engine needs. Adding a litre does not necessarily answer it, and neither does driving another two kilometres to somewhere more convenient.

Nissan’s warning about what happens next is blunt: “Running the engine with the engine oil pressure warning light illuminated could cause serious damage to the engine.” Volkswagen’s instruction for the same red lamp is simply “Switch off the engine immediately and do not restart. Check the oil level.” Ford’s is “Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and switch the engine off.”

There are two OTHER things on a modern dashboard that also involve oil and are not this. An amber oil LEVEL lamp — Volkswagen publish it as a separate warning on a separate page — means top it up soon. A spanner, or a message saying a service is due, is a mileage reminder: Mazda describe theirs as coming on “before reaching the maximum interval of 16,000 km (10,000 miles), or 12 months”. One of these three is an emergency and the other two are errands. They are not interchangeable, and a great many people treat them as though they were.

Coolant temperature

The red thermometer, or a temperature gauge above its normal range, is the one that matters most in this climate — the National Center of Meteorology’s own forecasts this month put inland maxima at 43 to 47°C, and every cooling system in the country is working near the top of its design envelope for months at a time. Nissan’s instruction is unambiguous: “Never continue driving if the engine of your vehicle overheats. Doing so could cause a vehicle fire.” Mazda’s is “Do not drive the vehicle with the high engine coolant temperature warning light turned on”, and warns that “the engine could be seriously damaged unless repairs are made.”

The battery symbol — which is not about the battery

A red battery lamp while the engine is running is one of the most commonly misread signals on the dashboard. It does not mean the battery is flat. It means the car has stopped charging it. Mazda: “If the warning light illuminates while driving, it indicates a malfunction of the alternator or of the charging system”, and “Do not continue driving when the charging system warning light is illuminated because the engine could stop unexpectedly.” Volkswagen say the same: “There is an alternator fault or a fault in the system.”

The practical consequence is a countdown. Everything the car needs is now coming out of a battery nothing is refilling, and when it runs out the engine stops — along with the power steering assistance and much else. Drive towards somewhere you can stop safely, not towards home.

Brakes, and airbags

A red brake lamp has three possible meanings and only one of them is harmless. Ford put the checking order plainly: “If it illuminates when you are driving, check that the parking brake is not engaged. If the parking brake is not engaged, this indicates low brake fluid level or a brake system malfunction.” The US federal standard for brake systems requires that lamp to cover exactly those conditions — a loss of fluid or pressure, an electrical failure in the anti-lock or proportioning system, or the parking brake applied. Mazda are direct about the stakes: “It indicates that your brakes may not work at all or that they could completely fail at any time.”

The airbag lamp does not stop the car and it is still red, because of what it means when the car is stopped for you. Mazda: “In a collision, the air bags and the seat belt pretensioner system will not deploy and this could result in death or serious injury.”

The engine lamp: steady or flashing

This is the important one, and almost nobody is told it. The amber engine symbol — the malfunction indicator lamp — reports a fault in the systems the car monitors for emissions. Steady, it is a fault worth diagnosing soon. Flashing, it is a different instruction entirely, and the reason is written into the regulation that makes it flash.

California’s on-board diagnostics regulation, which US federal rules adopt, contains a clause headed “Misfire causing catalyst damage”. It requires that “the MIL shall blink once per second at all times while misfire is occurring during the driving cycle” — and that when the misfiring stops, “the MIL shall remain continuously illuminated”. The steady lamp and the flashing lamp can be the same fault. The flashing one means it is happening right now, and that unburnt fuel is going into an exhaust system whose catalyst is being destroyed by it.

The California Air Resources Board puts the consumer version on its own fact sheet: “There are certain malfunctions that can cause the warning light to blink. This indicates that a malfunction is occurring that could be damaging your catalytic converter. Because replacement of the catalyst can be expensive, many manufacturers recommend having the vehicle serviced as soon as possible if the warning light is blinking.”

Steady amber engine lamp: book it in. Flashing amber engine lamp: reduce load, stop driving it, and have it recovered rather than driven.

The amber ones: book it in

ABS is the clearest example of why amber is not red. Nissan: “If an ABS malfunction occurs, the anti-lock function is turned off. The brake system then operates normally, but without anti-lock assistance.” The car still stops — the same US standard that governs the brake lamp requires it to, and quantifies how much worse: from 100 km/h a car must stop within 70 metres normally, and within 85 metres with an anti-lock failure. Fifteen metres is a real amount of road, and it is also not a reason to abandon the car.

Stability control is the opposite trap: the same lamp means two opposite things depending on whether it blinks. The US federal standard permits manufacturers to “use the ESC malfunction telltale in a flashing mode to indicate ESC operation”, while a steady lamp “must illuminate only when a malfunction of the ESC system exists”. Ford put both halves in one sentence: “While driving, it flashes during activation of the system… if it does not illuminate or illuminates continuously while driving, this indicates a malfunction.” A flicker on a roundabout is the car working. A lamp that stays on is the car telling you it has stopped.

Electric power steering, likewise, does not take the steering away. Ford: “You will continue to have full steering but will need to exert greater force on the steering wheel.” Nissan add the detail that decides where you park: “greater steering efforts are required… especially in sharp turns and at low speeds.” That is a car you can drive to a workshop and cannot comfortably manoeuvre in a basement car park.

Tyre pressure, and why the lamp is late

The tyre pressure lamp is an alarm, not a gauge, and the threshold is written into the standard that requires it. A tyre pressure monitoring system must warn “not more than 20 minutes after the inflation pressure in one or more of the vehicle’s tires… is equal to or less than… the pressure 25 percent below the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold inflation pressure”. By the time it lights, the tyre is already a quarter down. That is not a reserve; that is a last resort.

Note the word “cold” in that definition — the placard pressure on the door pillar is a COLD pressure, which is a real complication in a country where nothing is cold and a tyre that has been on the Emirates Road for an hour reads higher than it did on the driveway. Check pressures in the morning, before the car has been driven, and set them to the placard.

The deeper issue in this climate is not pressure but age. The US road safety agency’s own research presentation describes the mechanism: “Chemical aging occurs in a tire over time due to combined exposure to heat and oxygen (Thermo-oxidative degradation)”, and the field pattern that follows from it: “tire aging failures tend to occur in the states with high ambient temperatures, during the summer months while the vehicle is being driven at highway speeds.” It adds the detail everyone forgets: “Tire aging occurs whether a tire is driven or not, which means that it also occurs on spare tires.” The RTA’s own inspection material states that tyres expire five years from the date of manufacture, and that date is stamped on every tyre as four digits: week, then year.

Two things not to do

The first is to have the light cleared. It does not fix anything, it erases the evidence a technician needs, and on cars from roughly 2010 onwards it does not even work reliably: the regulation requires that permanent fault codes be stored in non-volatile memory and “may not be erasable by any scan tool command (generic or enhanced) or by disconnecting power to the on-board computer.” Left alone, the car will put the lamp out itself once the fault has genuinely gone — the same regulation allows the lamp to be extinguished “after three subsequent sequential driving cycles during which the monitoring system responsible for illuminating the MIL functions and the previously detected malfunction is no longer present.” A lamp that goes out by itself has proved something. A lamp somebody switched off has proved nothing.

The second is to treat the hard shoulder as a workshop. The UAE’s traffic fines schedule lists “Failure to take the necessary road safety measures upon the vehicle breakdown” at AED 500, and the government’s own road safety page states that “parking, stopping or repairing vehicles on roads or sidewalks is prohibited”. The RTA’s vehicle inspection material lists a reflective triangle, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit and a spare tyre among the boot contents it checks — which is a good argument for confirming yours are actually in there before the day you need them. The emergency number is 999.

When the lamp is amber and the car is driveable, the useful next step is a proper diagnostic session — reading the stored codes, the pending codes and the freeze frame data rather than guessing from the symbol. When it is red, the useful next step is the hazard lights and a phone.
