White smoke comes out of the exhaust
The first thing to establish is whether it is smoke at all. A thin white vapour on a cold start that thins out and disappears within a minute or two is condensation leaving the exhaust, and it is normal — even here, where a cold morning is relative. What is not normal is white smoke that continues once the engine is warm, is thick enough to hang in the air behind the car, and often carries a faintly sweet smell. That combination means coolant is reaching somewhere it should not, and the set to be separated is a head gasket, a cracked head, a failed inlet gasket or, on some engines, an oil cooler. Those are very different repairs, and the useful evidence is not the smoke — it is a pressure test, the coolant level over time, and what is found in the coolant and the oil.
Can I keep driving it?
Drivable, but do not leave it
If it is only a brief cold-start vapour, nothing needs doing. If it persists warm, treat it as urgent even though the car still drives perfectly well — that is the trap with this one. Coolant entering a cylinder does not announce itself with a warning light, and an engine losing coolant is an engine heading for an overheat, which is what turns a gasket into a head or a block. Check the coolant level when the engine is cold, and if it is dropping with no puddle on the ground, stop driving it and have it collected.

The cheap tests come first
Compression, leak-down, a combustion gas test and an oil pressure reading cost a fraction of opening an engine and they answer most of the question. A misfire is checked against a coil and an injector before anyone says the word head.

You get a finding, not a verdict
The tests name the cylinder and they name what is wrong with it — a valve, a ring, a head gasket — and that is what you are told, together with what the repair costs. Which cylinder and why is a very different conversation from being told the engine is tired and needs opening.

Repair, rebuild or replace, priced against each other
Where more than one route is possible you get all of them with a price and a time against each, including the option of doing nothing for now. An engine that burns a little oil and is otherwise sound is sometimes best left alone, and we will say so.

Machining is documented
Head skimming, valve seat work and any external machining come back with a report, and that report is given to you with the invoice. Torque figures for the head are taken from the manufacturer procedure, and stretch bolts are replaced rather than reused.
